Florida tax breakdown: where your taxes go
Florida data updated · State budget model 2025 · Federal, state, and local taxes
Where do my Florida tax dollars go?
It depends on your ZIP code, income, and whether you own or rent. Federal income and payroll taxes fund programs like Social Security, Medicare, and defense. Florida has no broad individual state income tax. State taxes fund the Florida budget, and property taxes fund your county, city or town, schools, and special districts. Enter a Florida ZIP code to see your own breakdown, built from Florida DOR 2025 Millage and Taxes Levied Report and Florida DOR 2025 Taxing Authority Code Descriptions (TACD), with official county millage supplements.

Calculate where my Florida taxes goFlorida taxes we estimate
Every Florida estimate includes federal income tax, Social Security, and Medicare, plus:
- State Income Tax. Florida has no individual income tax.
- County, City, School, and District Property Tax. Layered property tax from Florida DOR 2025 millage.
How Florida state taxes work
- No Individual Income Tax: Article VII, Section 5 of the Florida Constitution prohibits a state tax on the income of natural persons.
- No Local Income Tax: Florida counties and cities do not levy a resident income tax.
- State Budget: The state tab shows a zero-dollar allocation; the category shares are FY 2025-26 General Revenue appropriations.
Sales and use, documentary stamp, communications services, fuel, tourist development, and other transaction taxes are outside the household income/property-tax estimate.
How Florida property tax works
- Formula: (home value − exemptions) × millage ÷ 1,000, computed separately for each levy.
- Assessed Value: The home value you enter is used as assessed value. Long-time homestead owners pay on a lower Save Our Homes value, so this can overstate their tax.
- Homestead: $25,000 is exempt from every levy; an additional $25,722 (2025) of value between $50,000 and $75,722 is exempt from non-school levies.
- Rates: Each city and unincorporated area uses one representative 2025 taxing area from the Florida DOR Taxing Authority Code Description (TACD), checked against the printed combined total: the area with the most parcels, the only eligible area, or the county's documented base code. Its county, county-dependent (MSTU, fire, library), city, school, and district levies are used as printed.
- Fallback Rates: Where no single reconciled taxing area could be chosen, the estimate uses DOR's 2025 adopted county, school, and city millage plus countywide-average special-district millage instead.
- Renters (placeholder estimate): Property tax in rent is estimated as 18% of annual rent, scaled by this area's millage. This is a shared placeholder assumption, not yet derived from Florida rental data, and will be replaced by a sourced per-state share.
- ZIP and Parcel Limits: A ZIP maps to one city or unincorporated area by land overlap, and a parcel can sit in a different taxing area than the representative one, so district levies on an actual bill can differ.
Save Our Homes assessment limits, senior, veteran, and disability exemptions, and non-ad valorem assessments (fire, solid waste, stormwater fees on the bill) are not modeled.

How is property tax calculated in Florida?
Formula: (home value − exemptions) × millage ÷ 1,000, computed separately for each levy. Assessed Value: The home value you enter is used as assessed value. Which taxes does Tax Transparency estimate for Florida residents?
Federal income tax, Social Security, and Medicare, plus these Florida taxes: State Income Tax and County, City, School, and District Property Tax.
Where does the Florida data come from, and how current is it?
The Florida estimate uses Florida DOR 2025 Millage and Taxes Levied Report, Florida DOR 2025 Taxing Authority Code Descriptions (TACD), with official county millage supplements, Florida EDR Local Government Revenues and Expenditures, U.S. Census Bureau Annual Survey of School System Finances FY2024, and Florida DOR 2025 CPI Homestead Exemption. The state budget model reflects 2025, and the state data was last updated October 2026.
What does the Florida estimate not include?
Sales and use, documentary stamp, communications services, fuel, tourist development, and other transaction taxes are outside the household income/property-tax estimate. Save Our Homes assessment limits, senior, veteran, and disability exemptions, and non-ad valorem assessments (fire, solid waste, stormwater fees on the bill) are not modeled. Florida local budgets come from Florida EDR local government expenditure reports (FY2022–FY2025, newest filed per government) and the Census FY2024 school finance survey. ZIP lookup is best-fit by Census ZCTA land overlap; rates come from a representative official taxing area, not your parcel's own taxing area.
